Taught by Festival filmmaker Ken Paul Rosenthal, this comprehensive, 2-part,
10-hour workshop will introduce filmmaking as a fine, but renegade, art
form. Two areas of alternative production will be covered in great detail;
direct manipulation and hand-processing. The emphasis is on low-to-no-tech
experimentation. An excellent primer for those who are new to making film
as a means of personal expression, or those looking to put some "funk"
into their films. Participants are encouraged to bring exposed Super-8
Ektachrome film to process for Sunday's session.
MEDIA ACTIVISM: A CRASH COURSE

Whispered Media,
the Empire Collective, Media Alliance and the Association of Independent
Film and Videomakers join forces at this workshop to share their field
experience in media activism. Whispered Media and the Empire Collective
screen clips and discuss the impact of their films in the community, and
representatives from Media Alliance and AIVF moderate a lively discussion
on the power of the political camera, the major obstacles faced in activist
media, and the future of social-issue filmmaking. This special event is
meant to ignite ideas and inspire artists to pick up their cameras and
change the world. Admission is free.
